5 out of 5 stars Best Media Player for the Money   November 26, 2008

I bought my Zune 80 at Futureshop for 200 about 2 months ago and I haven't looked back.

- The sound is great. It's definitely no worse than any other player (including the Creative Zen, Archos and iRiver series which have great sounds) and audibly (on a good set of speakers) better than any of the iPods.

- They come with good in-ears. Although I would still recommend getting a good pair of supra- or circum-aural headphones instead, these are perfectly good and I wouldn't bother with another pair if you're looking for something small.

- The interface is great. I personally like it more than the iPod's although that's my personal preference. At any rate, I haven't heard anyone say they dislike it.

- The price is right. 200$ for 80GB and a 3.2" screen? Hell yes.

- The screen is big (3.2"), gorgeous, with better contrast and depth of colour than the iPod Touch and in a different league than the classics. The only problem is that if your movie has subtitles they may be hard to see because of the 320x240 resolution. Overall, it is probably the best small thing for playing back movies.

- Very well built. I've dropped it a few times and there isn't even a nic on the thing. The glass screen doesn't require a screen-protector (although if you plan on carrying it with your keys I'd probably still get one), and the aluminium outside doesn't scratch. It's a very solid device.

- Great battery life. I get upwards of 32-33 music playback and 4 video.

- Lifecycle assurance. You know that Microsoft will keep updating the firmware as long as possible: the original Zunes are on the latest version of the firmware as of now (3.1) and it doesn't look like the trend is stopping.

- It has a "Now Playing" playlist. I know this may seem minor to most, but it is very important to me. It is well done.

- The games are pretty decent. Space Battle is pretty fun, I've wasted hours on end play Sudoku on it, the Checkers AI is subpar, Hexic controls are sorta counter-intuitive, and Texas Hold Em on electronic devices just isn't my thing.

- Zune software is great. I really like it. It has a really good interface and music discovery feature. The only problem I have with it is that it pops up whenever I plug in the Zune.

- The WiFi ends up being sorta useless. I only use it to play games with my two friends who have Zunes. I just never bothered with wireless sync and the Social features are useless seeing as there are about 10 (ok, probably more, but you get the point) Zune users on campus.

- It has radio. I don't really listen to it much, if at all, so I won't judge it.

Grievances:

- It's sort of sensitive about the humidity. I went out in the rain, and I wouldn't say it got soaked, but there were definitely streaks of water on the screen. It started skipping songs every 10 seconds. I turned it off, let it dry and it worked fine again.

- Before firmware update 3.1 it would freeze up every week or two, and I couldn't figure out a pattern, but now it doesn't.

- No DivX/XviD/Mpeg2/4 support. It really seems counter-intuitive that a device that looks like it's made for video clips wouldn't have that support for the default video distribution codecs, but there you go.

2 out of 5 stars Returned it and spent more on a iPod Touch   September 4, 2008

I owned the Zune 80gb for two days before I was underwhelmed enough to return it. Microsoft lured me in with supporting dvr-ms recorded tv files and alas - it "no workie". It seems the dvr-ms files created in vista are not the same as the dvr-ms from XP Media Center Edition (my OS). So unless I buy a vista upgrade I can't watch my recorded tv shows on the shiny new zune.

Rather than use more cash for new operating system I decided to use that extra cash for the iPod Touch and it was the best decision I've made in a while. The zune headphones were nice, the 80gb was plenty but the Touch is in a class it's own, sorry Microsoft, I'm a iPod guy now.

this zune was $207 when i bought it a few weeks ago here- but anyways, I love my zune- this zune has a way bigger screen that ipod classic- all the better to view videos with- sort of like the ipod touch... but the ipod touch only goes up to 32GB! so you have to either sacrifice screen size or storage size if you go with ipod- and either way it will cost you more $$.
so i'd say the zune is an excellent choice- given its excellent quality and user friendliness. thanks microsoft!
p.s. i love the earphones that come with it- best ones i've ever had
p.p.s. i havent bought a charger yet because it charges itself automatically when you have it hooked up to your computer via USB cable.

5 out of 5 stars Great!   August 18, 2008

The Zune 80 GB gives a lot for the money. I had previously owned a small Samsung MP3 player which finally died after a year of use. When I replaced it with the Zune--after a lot of research and comparison shopping--I was very pleased.

The video quality is excellent, as is the sound. It is easy to use the software and the Zune screen is big enough to see what I am looking for. The 80 GB capacity makes it possible to store everything I want since a converted movie takes up about 400 MB.

One suggestion is to buy a good case for it asap. With this kind of investment, I would not want to drop it and lose the whole thing.
