The desktop experience is more informative, intuitive, and helpful. And new tools bring better clarity to the information on your computer, so you can see what your files contain without opening them, find applications and files instantly, navigate efficiently among open windows, and use wizards and dialog boxes more confidently. Secure and Effective Windows Vista Home Basic helps people use their PCs securely and reliably, makes it simple to stay better connected, and, like all of the editions of Windows Vista, is compatible with the widest range of software, devices, and services that people use and trust every day. For those who simply want to use their PC to surf the Internet, correspond with friends and family using email, or perform basic document creation and editing tasks, Windows Vista Home Basic delivers a safer, more reliable, and more effective computing environment. More Productivity Windows Vista Home Basic helps encourage better personal productivity while providing digital entertainment on your PC through its improved reliability, security, and performance. It also helps you to accomplish tasks faster, with a rich new interface and innovative ways to organize and find the information stored on your PC. Safer and More Reliable Specifically designed to be the safest operating system Microsoft has ever delivered, Windows Vista Home Basic frees you from worry about the safety and security of your time on the computer. In fact, every edition of Windows Vista, including Windows Vista Home Basic, provides the essential tools and technologies to help protect you whether you are browsing the Internet, connecting to a wireless network, or just reading e-mail. In addition, Windows Vista Home Basic includes innovative tools that warn you of impending hardware failures long before you have lost any important personal data. Additionally, this system comes equipped with up-to-date parental control features that allow you to manage and monitor your family's use of games, the Internet, instant messaging, and other activities on your PC that might concern you as a parent. Easy Set-Up and Operation As with all of other editions of Windows Vista, Windows Vista Home Basic makes your PC significantly easier to use thanks to helpful tools that let you painlessly move your personal files and settings from your old PC to your new Windows Vista-based PC. Additionally, Windows Vista Home Basic integrates new search tools throughout the operating system to help you quickly find the precise file or program you need. Even if your existing PC seems to be adequate for basic tasks such as reading e-mail and browsing the web, by upgrading your PC to Windows Vista Home Basic or by purchasing a new PC installed with this software, you will benefit from a better computing experience and more peace of mind.

Not great but has redeeming features February 17, 2008 Got Vista Home Basic for my daughter's PC and my experience with it has been mixed. From the outset, the 512MB my daughter's PC was equipped with was nowhere near enough. Upgrading to 2GB is a must and got it performing how it should. Installing a Vista-compatible wireless network card was an exercise in frustration - using the Microsoft/Marvel reference drivers was a no go. I eventually bought a D-Link card as they support their own Vista drivers and don't use the reference ones. All in all, not a good start. On the plus side, the family safety features and integration with Live OneCare are fantastic and the best thing to be added to the OS over XP, in my opinion. Sure you can get add-ons for XP to do the job, but they aren't as complete. My concerns for my daughter accessing inappropriate material or using the PC until late at night are mostly put to rest thanks to the rating system and accessibility schedule (think curfew enforcer!). If you have kids and would like to have some built in control over how they use the PC, I totally recommend Vista Home Basic. If you have an older PC and want to update the OS to keep current and modern, think twice... you may need to buy more hardware to support the OS at a performance level you can be happy with.
Underappreciated - a great operating system October 3, 2007 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
90% of the people that hate Windows Vista haven't even tried Windows Vista. I've had it since March and it's definitely the best operating system released by Microsoft yet. Windows XP was great - not at release, but was great after a while and even though Vista has some minor issues and bugs it's great too. It's not that much of a resource hog either, in fact it runs just as quickly and smoothly as XP did on my system.
Great choice for an operating system although upgrading to Home Premium instead of Home Basic would be advisable.
Pay To Become Microsoft's beta-Testers? NO THANKS! September 6, 2007 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
When WinXP came out I refused to abandon my reliable Win98SE until SP2 was released and WinXP finally became an operating system (from the experimental eye-candy it first was). Experts advise us to do the same with WinVISTA - yet I do not think this is ever gonna happen...
WinVISTA is far WORSE than the initial release of WinXP: NUMEROUS and MAJOR compatibility problems with most third-party Software, Games (well, all games except...HALO2), GFX-Cards, Scanners & Printers, Cameras & USB-Peripherals. Not to mention Microsoft Software!
Even MICROSOFT Software (such as STREETS & TRIPS 2007, ENCARTA 2007, PICTURE-IT or MONEY 2007) refuses to work with WinVISTA! If they did not care to support their own Software, why should anyone else! And all this trouble just for the cool Aero effect (which, by the way, may be NOT supported on your 2007 PC!) and DirectX10 (for which, you do know, there is not one affordable GFX-card compatible with?)? I don't think so!
Windows is an OPERATING SYSTEM! Why is it pretending to be able to DO EVERYTHING? It canNOT! Sure, it is nice to be able to listen to music, burn CDs, browse the Internet. But that is why there are so many Specialized Software availle! And, what is even worse, WinVISTA will not let exactly these Software titles function as intended!
I had WinVISTA on my Laptop for about a week. I could not format quick enough! There is NOTHING WRONG with my WinXP-SP2. WHY CHANGE THEM?
