From Amazon.com Genetic research and cloning are all the rage today, but they gripped the imagination of 19th century authors as well. Jules Verne and H.G. Wells--particularly as evident in Wells's Island of Doctor Moreau--theorized how human scientists (mad, of course) could combine different creatures to make new hybrids. That's the goal behind Impossible Creatures, a rather vanilla real-time-strategy game with one heck of a cool twist. The story concerns adventurer/big-game hunter Rex Chance and his skirmishes with a mad scientist bent on world domination through animal engineering. Rex has to gather DNA from animals and combine them in his Creature Lab, giving rise to such oddities as the Shagle (shark/eagle), Eleph-Ant (elephant/ant), Bull-o-Dile (crocodile/bull), and whatever else you want to come up with. The missions of the single-player game are linked with a strong backstory that's nicely flavored with touches straight from adventure serials of the '40s. But the game's limitations are also clearest in single-player mode. It's just a regular old real-time strategy game at heart. The creature gimmick is cool, but once you figure out what critters you need, it becomes dull. Multiplayer mode is a different story. You can load up to eight creatures to form an army, selecting the beasts you can use in the match. This means, potentially, if you load the wrong beasts your opponent can swarm all over you. The fun comes when you start strategizing on how to beat your enemy's army with the Creature Combiner interface. Of course, in order to really enjoy this feature you need to play the same opponent more than once. That's not an easy task, thanks to the lackluster multiplayer matchmaking service offered by Impossible Creatures (as compared to, say, Age of Mythology). It would be better if you could customize armies during the game, but real-time pacing precludes that option. The graphics are great, the audio is too, and you can't beat the concept. It could be a better game, and there are better real-time games out there, but none of them let you make a Skant (skunk/ant) or a massive Sperm Grizzly (sperm whale/grizzly bear) and who wouldn't want to do that? --Andrew S. Bub Pros: - Combining creatures is just plain cool
- Challenging multiplayer
- Great backstory
Cons: - Shallow gameplay
- Poor pathfinding

This is an extremely easy, but fun game. Even though it is pretty easy, you can play the same mission over and over again. I beat the game on the hardest level about twenty times and didn't get bored. You can combine two animals together for a invinvible mutant army. It is much like Warcraft 3 or Armymen R.T.S. I highly recomend it for young and old players.
Impossible Creatures March 26, 2004 I have played hundreds of computer, PS2, and Xbox games, but this is my all time favorite game for any console. You get to combine two animals into one animal with both of their strengths, and no weaknesses. This is fun, but not the the funest part. It is an R.T.S. game much like WarCraft 3 or Army Men R.T.S., and has an ecellent story-line. Now, on Microsoft.com/impossiblecreatures, they have twenty-five more animals to download. Not to mention the fifty animals you get in the game. This is the best game in the world!
Great game for young and old! December 1, 2003 My son and I have great fun mixing and matching creatures. Testing the high breads on the field can be very rewarding or very disappointing. Try the Sperm Whale and the Wolverine - 1500+ health points. Building your own maps is very rewarding. Deciding whether it should be each person for themself - teams - or taking on all the others by yourself is big fun too. Buy and enjoy - you won't regret it!
Great game, Freaking Hard November 30, 2003 I played this game, LOve it, i was following this game after i beat homeworld; back in the days when it was called Sigma. (which by the way was a much cooler name) I got this game when it came out last year, and i got to say it is really really cool, combining creatures is totally fun, but just like in homeworld, after you beat the first mission it get really freaking hard. well.. maybe after the first island, the second part i can't beat, i try and try. I'm currently trying to get my skills up to snuff by playing against the computer in 'player vs computer' mode. I played a really slow game the other night with a total disadvantage, and ending up playing for 2 hours and 45 minutes, i recorded a demo btw. I won the game, i felt so awesome, i won with a disadvantage and one of my weakest creatures. Since i was playing the free add on, Insect Invasion, i made this crappy army, i dont think i was thinking straight when i combined the Ant with the Termite, making a Termant; i didn't realise they were pretty much the same creature, i was looking for a cheap creature i could manufacture. That was the creature i one the game with. Now i think i'm ready to fianlly beat the second island; i'm so bad at strategy games i know. Only thing is, I wish there were more animals to download, oh well; i guess i'll have to wait for those sweet mods to come out. oh yeah, Shark + Scorpion all the way.
